Mason Potts, Blue Ridge Boys Golf Ends Season at Tuscola Sectional

TUSCOLA, Ill. -- With the rest of his team already departing from Ironhorse Golf Course, Mason Potts remained in the clubhouse for a little while longer.

With a score of 89, he appeared to have a chance at being declared one of the individual qualifiers. However, it was not meant to be, as Potts (pictured below) fell nine strokes short of qualifying for the state tournament.

Eureka's Trevor Gold earned first individual qualifier honors by shooting a 74. Austin Sproles of Tri-Valley had a score of 74 to get the second qualifier spot.

The final qualifier spot went to Midland's Brice Elsasser, who shot an 80.

"I thought [this season] went pretty well," Potts said. "I'm pleased with it."

Potts' score led Blue Ridge, who finished 10th in the sectional with a team score of 364. Bismarck-Henning (328), Bloomington Cornerstone (335) and Casey-Westfield (335) will be at the Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington next weekend.

Leading the way for Bismarck-Henning was Andy Bott, who was the meet's medalist with a score of 73.

Potts began the day with a front-nine score of 47. However, he made some adjustments to shoot a 42 on the back nine.

"I made some mistakes on some holes, but I did a lot better in the back nine," Potts said. "I was just trying to let go of what happened on the front and made sure to focus on the next shot."

Austin Maxwell (pictured below) shot a 42 on the back nine as well to finish the sectional with a score of 90.

Along with Tucker Johnson, Maxwell has ended his career as a golfer for Blue Ridge. Potts, however, is a freshman, and he said he will miss playing alongside Maxwell and Johnson.

"They're very nice guys," Potts said. "I wish they could stay, and it's sad to see them go. They are very key players on the team."

C.J. Bishop also shot a 90 for Blue Ridge, including a 43 on the back nine. Will Duggins contributed to the Knights' team score by shooting a 95, including a back-nine score of 46.

Justin Jamison and Dylan Weidner shot a 98 and a 99, respectively. Neither score contributed to Blue Ridge's final score.
